Our Mission 

Quincy Animal Shelter (QAS) is dedicated to advocating for animals by providing a safe environment until they are placed in permanent homes. We promote spay and neuter programs to help control pet overpopulation and strive to be a leading community resource for education on responsible animal welfare. 

Board of Directors Recruitment 

We are currently seeking qualified and committed individuals to join our Board of Directors. We welcome candidates with professional expertise in the following areas: 

  • Legal (501(c)(3) compliance, liability, employment law, contracts) 
  • Human Resources 
  • Information Technology 
  • Finance, budgeting, and investments 
  • Fundraising and grant writing 
  • Other relevant professional experience or specialized skills that can contribute to the organization’s governance, growth, and mission 

Role of the Board 

The Board of Directors provides strategic leadership and governance to support the mission of Quincy Animal Shelter, Inc. While the Executive Director (ED) oversees day-to-day operations, the Board and ED work in close partnership. Active Board engagement is both critical and expected. 

Board Member Responsibilities 

Board members are expected to: 

  • Ensure appropriate financial oversight, including reviewing financial systems, evaluating organizational health, and contributing to the annual budgeting process 
  • Hire, support, and evaluate the Executive Director 
  • Review materials in advance of board and committee meetings 
  • Serve on at least one committee and actively contribute to its work 
  • Support and participate in fundraising initiatives and events 
  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts 
  • Assist in identifying, recruiting, and onboarding new board members 
  • Participate in succession planning 
  • Participate in voting on key organizational matters and, when necessary, serve as a proxy representative to ensure quorum and continuity of governance decisions 
  • Support the Board Chair in ensuring implementation of board decisions 
  • Provide thoughtful and constructive feedback to fellow board members 
  • Adhere to the organization’s By-Laws, Code of Ethics, and Code of Conduct 
  • Act always in the best interest of Quincy Animal Shelter 

Terms and Attendance Requirements 

  • Board members serve an initial one-year term, followed by two-year terms upon re-election 
  • Attendance at a minimum of 9 out of 11 annual board meetings is required 
  • Meetings are held at 99 Quarry Street, Quincy, on the third Tuesday of each month (excluding December, unless otherwise required) 
  • Participation in two annual strategic planning meetings is required 
  • Board members are expected to support fundraising efforts, including making an annual financial contribution and/or assisting with donor and sponsorship outreach 
  • Committee meetings are scheduled at the discretion of committee chairs and may be held in person, virtually, or by phone 

Qualifications 

Ideal candidates will possess: 

  • Prior nonprofit board or leadership experience (preferred) 
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities 
  • A solid understanding of financial and tax reporting 
  • Integrity and sound judgment, with a commitment to acting in the best interest of the organization 

Note: Active QAS volunteers are not eligible to serve on the Board. 

Board Governance – Scope of Responsibility 

To ensure effective governance, the Board does not: 

  • Participate in day-to-day shelter operations 
  • Establish or enforce internal operational policies 
  • Make decisions regarding animal care 
  • Intervene in routine management decisions or the operational responsibilities of the Executive Director and staff 
  • Supervise, discipline, or direct staff or volunteers 
  • Serve as volunteers within the organization

Qualified candidates will be invited to attend at least two board meetings. Final candidates must be nominated by a current Board member and elected in accordance with the organization’s By-Laws.
