Feral Cat Program (Wild Cats) - Updated June 26th, 2009
Our Feral Cat Program is in dire need of Volunteers willing to feed and trap Quincy's feral population. Feral cats are un-socialized cats that have been abandoned by their previous families, or have been born in the wild to an un-socialized mother. Helping the ferals is very rewarding, rarely ever dangerous, and a tremendous help to those poor unfortunate creatures that have been left to fend for themselves and their babies out in the wild. With no regular source of food, or shelter, they are easy prey for animals, and a host of deadly viruses, parasites, and disease. As a Feeder, you would deliver food and water to a colony once a day, watch out for them and report the presence of any sick, injured, or new arrivals to the Feral Manager. As a Feeder, you'll quickly realize how appreciative the cats are to have dinner show at the same time every day and eventually notice some coming closer and looking for attention. As a Trapper, you would work with the Feral Manager to trap unaltered cats. They would then be examined, sterilized, and vaccinated, and then, after recuperation, released back to the colony. Consider yourself a "Sigourney Weaver, in Gorillas in the Mist", but with a much happier outcome for all involved and without the mountains to climb! Please help our Feral Cat Program and these needy cats and kittens. All it takes is 15 minutes of your day to drop off food and watch the cats and kittens eat dinner or breakfast, that's it. If you have an hour or two to help with trapping, our team can use the extra hands. And the ferals will thank you for it.
If you are interested or can help in any way with our Feral Cat program, please contact our Feral Manager at 617-376-1349, or by email at feralcats@quincyanimalshelter.org. Donations can also be made to the attention of the Feral Cat Program.
Medical Team Member:
Administer meds to our cats and dogs. If you can commit to at least one two-hour morning or evening shift per week, please contact our MEDICAL MANAGER at 617-376-1349 or by email at medical@quincyanimalshelter.org. If you don't have vet tech experience but are comfortable handling a variety of animals, we will train you.
Dog Trainer:
Can you make a regular commitment to a special dog? You will help him/her to become more adoptable, and you will make a new best friend at the same time. Please contact our CANINE MANAGER/TRAINER at 617-376-1349 or by email at caninemanager@quincyanimalshelter.org.
Adoption Reps/Greeters:
Adoptions are the lifeblood of the shelter, if we cannot find homes for the animals we have in house, we cannot take more in off the streets. Being an adoption rep is a very rewarding position, you get to meet people from all walks of life and get to match them up with their new forever friend, what could be better than that?! However, being an adoption rep requires excellent communication skills, a non judgmental attitude, attention to detail and commitment. If you have what it takes, please consider helping out with adoptions. Currently we have a huge need for adoption reps/greeters and even if you can only commit to 2 hours a week, it'd be a great help.
Do you have a special skill (Photography? Writing? Construction? Gardening?) or are you interested in Volunteering for any of the above tasks? If so, please print out our Volunteer Application and drop it off at the Shelter during regular adoption hours, or mail it to: Quincy Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 690088, Quincy, MA 02269-0088. Contact the our Volunteer Team Manager at 617-376-1349 or by email at volunteer@quincyanimalshelter.org with any questions.
